When is the best time to tune up your financial plan?
There is no time like the present!

Here are four resolutions that we will be featuring:

  1. Create a family balance sheet — It is impossible to know how much you are spending or saving without accounting for what you typically spend. Document how much income you bring and the value of the assets and liabilities (debt) you still owe.
  2. Match up expenses with income — Take a hard look at your budget. Where did you do well? Where did spending get off track? Has something changed that affected your expenses or your income? Answering these questions will help any family know where they can cut back, or ensure they are putting enough away for retirement or that annual family vacation.
  3. Pay yourself first — No one can predict the future, so be prepared for any financial setback. This includes setting aside at least six months of living expenses in easily accessed accounts.
  4. Identify your sources of retirement income — No matter your age, keep a firm grasp of where your retirement income will come from. Do you anticipate an inheritance? For that government job you had 5 years ago, what will you receive in your pension? Does your current company offer 401(k) matching?
